Typing Speed Test
Test your WPM and accuracy. Choose a time limit, start typing, and see your results instantly.
How Fast Should You Type?
The average typing speed for adults is between 38 and 45 words per minute (WPM). Professional typists typically reach 65 to 75 WPM, and competitive typists often exceed 100 WPM. For most office work and everyday computer use, 60 WPM is a comfortable and productive target.
WPM is calculated by counting the number of words typed and dividing by the number of minutes elapsed. Our test uses a standardised 5-character-per-word definition — so typing 300 characters in one minute equals 60 WPM, regardless of actual word lengths.
Accuracy matters as much as speed. A typist who reaches 80 WPM with 95% accuracy is more productive than one hitting 100 WPM at 80% accuracy, because the time spent correcting errors erases the speed advantage. Aim for at least 95% accuracy before pushing for higher WPM.
FAQ
How is WPM calculated?
WPM = (number of words typed) ÷ (minutes elapsed). A 'word' is standardised at 5 keystrokes. So 250 characters in one minute = 50 WPM.
How is accuracy calculated?
Accuracy = (correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes) × 100. Every key you press is counted, including corrections.
What is a good WPM score?
Below 30: beginner. 30–50: average. 50–70: above average. 70–90: fast. 90+: professional or competitive level.
Why does my WPM vary between tests?
Passage difficulty, word familiarity, and fatigue all affect WPM. Your true speed is the average across many tests.
Will practising here improve my speed?
Yes. Consistent typing practice — even 10 minutes daily — builds muscle memory and increases WPM over weeks. Focus on accuracy first, then gradually push speed.
